vol.08 On an Empty Floor

1 August 2026

Standing on an empty floor.

The sounds of midsummer bounce off the concrete and make the heat worse. No air conditioning, nothing at all — just standing here, and the sweat starts running. Summer is my favorite season, but even I don't love the way a shirt clings to your skin.

In the winter of 2019, I stood on an empty floor just like this one. The cold hadn't let go yet. My breath rose white in front of me, and the cold rose too, up out of the concrete and into my body.

Seven years.

In that time, the number of places pouring coffee has grown. The city looks different. A lot has changed. But we have gone on brewing coffee, only coffee. Is that conviction, or attachment, or just being left behind? Maybe there was something close to stubbornness in it.

When I stood on that floor in 2019, I was deciding everything alone. I had no idea how to decide any of it, so I started with the first thing I could. Maybe what I really didn't want to change was how I felt back then.

It's different now.
How we say things, what we're still missing — the people around me tell me.

And even so.

Is this right? Wouldn't it be more interesting the other way? I keep turning over decisions I'd already made. Some days I can't hide my impatience with time passing. Other days nothing has even begun and I'm already picturing how good it could be.

Maybe this restlessness is what building a shop is.

I'm filling in the blueprint in my head, one colour at a time. Before long there will be sound in this room. Voices, the grinder, the door opening.

What kind of time will come from here? I hope it turns out to be something good for someone.
